Central Can Company is committed to sustainable business practices, and we are doing our part to protect the environment. As a leading manufacturer of steel and plastic containers, we would like to share our sustainability initiatives and describe how they lessen our impact on the environment.
Steel Recycling
Approximately 25 percent of our purchased steel is produced from recycled raw materials. Post-industrial material is recycled by scrap companies for resale to steel mills. We collect used steel containers from customers for reprocessing.
Plastic Recycling
More than 25 percent of the recycled resin that we purchase is either post-consumer or post-industrial material. Our containers are made with a percentage of recycled resin which exceeds any current mandated state requirements. We reclaim and reuse resin onsite or send it to plastic recyclers for resale.
Other Initiatives
Our sustainability practices touch virtually every area of our manufacturing facility.
Coatings: We strive to use water-based rather than solvent-based coatings in steel manufacturing. Plus, we work in partnership with coatings suppliers to increase our use of water-based applications and lower our volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Energy: We develop innovative package designs that reduce the number of components and require less energy to manufacture.
Fuel: We work with customers to optimize packaging so it maximizes shipping space, minimizes emissions, and lowers fuel usage.
Packaging: We continue to look at weight-reducing plastic and steel containers so they are thinner and use less raw material.
Paper: We sponsor programs for customers to return packaging and materials for reuse and send paper products to recyclers at the end of their life cycle.
Power: We use plastic injection molding equipment that combines electric and hydraulic power to conserve energy.
Solvents: Industrial solvents used in our manufacturing process are recycled as cleaning products and later serve as fuel in the cement-making process.
Water: We conserve water in the plastic manufacturing process by using closed-loop systems that eliminate evaporation.
